I'm also considered getting my dream rig instead, if I can work out a deal with my parents. Would that be a wise decision? I mean, my amp only breaks up subtly when I hit the strings pretty hard.

Depends. Dream rigs change over time for most. With so much good equipment coming out, the for sale forums here are usually flooded with good items at decent prices. I'm not sure I'd sell the farm, so to speak, to get something you may change your mind about in the relatively near future.

Only you know how fickle you are with sound. I've changed amps a bit in the last few years and probably won't buy much of anything new for a while out of fear I'd lose my shirt reselling it when I find something else. I tend to hand on to basses. Amps, not so much.
