Define "badass"?

The word badass isn't even badass. Using the name of an animal born from the mating of a horse and a donkey instead of saying the apparently naughty word arse, is just so far from badarse.... :) (Sorry Americans, the avoidance of the word arse has always amused me. Like using shoot for s**t and frak,or feck, for that other f word, when everyone really knows what words are meant, swearing without swearing is surely still swearing?) ;)

Still I'm an Aussie and us Aussies just don't give a F**K.

Most important for me is that it not be trendy... like the way being a biker used to mean something. It used to be feared and hated. It was NOT cool to be a biker... at all. Now you have more people than you could ever imagine pretending to be.... they emulate outlaw bikers but then scare away when a real biker comes around... even outlaw bikers, busy posing as real gangsters but shy away when the heavy it goes down...start acting like swans.

Disclaimer...if you ride your bike you’re a motorcycle enthusiast....if you ride like hell as much much as you can even when you shouldn’t....no matter who you are or what you ride...you’re a biker....but in the “badass” meaning of a biker....biker means outlaw....

Same goes for all subcultures... if its become popular it’s no longer badass it’s just a fad full of posers. Hokie poke types

I see a lot of use of the word "badass" to describe people and objects. It bemuses me. Where I came from, badass meant people who you seriously did not mess with, because they were capable of and inclined toward exaggerated acts of physical violence. When I hung out in South Chicago and when I served in the Marines in the '60s, the badasses were people who might kill you if you irritated them. "Badass" meant scary. The Blackstone Rangers were badass. NVA sapper teams were badass.

The badass didnt come from costume, and you couldnt talk your way into being thought a badass.

Now I see the word applied to bass headstocks, power stances, makeup, and paint jobs. A strap can be badass. People discuss whether a 35" 4 string bass is more badass than a 34" 5 string. Can someone please explain this linguistic shift? Does badass just mean trendy now...is "badass" the new "cool"? or do people now actually think that a spiky bass or strap with chrome studs really makes you physically intimidating?
YES this 3" custom strap is badass >
