My bandmates understand what I'm saying if I call band practice tonight.I'll clarify:
Defining "Practice vs rehearsal" to your spouse = semantics
Defining "Practice vs rehearsal" to your band = important setting of expectations
Well sort of. There's more to a rehearsal than just running sets. If your point was that people should be learning their parts at home, you are correct, but it's pretty common that slight adjustments are needed when all the individuals get together. If all you do is run through sets, why do you rehearse? That's what gigs are for.For myself its always been... "Practice: what i do on my own time to make sure i know my bass parts within the songs. Or working with the band on newer material to make sure everyone knows their parts correctly. "Rehearsal": Everyone at the band pad on time, loading-in, soundchecking, running through the set-list in the correct amount of time, and loading-out just as if it was a live gig. I just get annoyed when i think its a "rehearsal" for an upcoming gig and along comes girlfriends, kids, dogs, and 12 packs. Or am i just an a**? Comments please!
No offense, but if defining these terms is an important bone of contention for a band of musicians, that doesn’t sound like a band I'd want to play with
Good definitions. Though in the quoted examples "practices courtesy" and "practices a dance step," "practice" is actually a transitive verb, not an intransitive one.practice /prăk′tĭs/
intransitive verb
rehearsal /rĭ-hûr′səl/
- To do or perform habitually or customarily; make a habit of.
"practices courtesy in social situations."- To do or perform (something) repeatedly in order to acquire or polish a skill.
"practice a dance step."
noun
- The act of practicing in preparation for a public performance.
- A session of practice for a performance, as of a play.
- A detailed enumeration or repetition.
"a long rehearsal of his woes."
I agree that "practice" you do by yourself to work on your chops, "rehearsal" is with the whole band. What you're describing with girlfriends and dogs and whatever is a "jam", which I got over years ago.For myself its always been...
