defret action question

Hi just a quick question on the action on a defret I done on an Ibanez g200. It was obviously pretty high to start with so I took the saddles down, but had to take them as far as they would go but that wasn't as low as I thought. It's one of those b10 bridges, I thought the screws would go all the way down till the saddles touched the bridge which they don't, so the action is still high and there's no curvature on the saddles to form a radius, just all sitting.

I also adjusted the relief by turning the truss rod a quarter every few hours for a couple of days, then to my horror I heard a slight *crack* but it seems alright :S. So with the strings off the neck it goes backwards, with the strings on the neck is flat so theres no relief. It sounds great however there's only a tiny amount of buzz.

I still have to file the nut a little when I get the time but I'm wondering if I can file the screws on the saddles down to the floor, or is that a bad idea? Other than this it sounds great but the action is still a little uncomfortable, its the first I've actually played a fretless so I don't know if this is expected? Cheers guys.

As long the neck has the correct relief, I think filing the nut down will give you the low action you are looking for.

I don't like to have the saddles that low.
I like them up high. I would shim the neck
to get it where it should be.

After de-fretting a neck, the nut usually
needs to be lowered.

I think I know the cause of your problem. I own a GSR200EX which had the same problem. The threads weren't tapped through, so the adjustment screws wouldn't go in far enough. If you remove the screws from the saddles you can rework the threads by tapping them completely through. For me it solved the problem. You might want to file the nut as well. I did so, as the strings were too high at the nut side as well.

I just filed the nut on my fretless (from the bottom!). While it makes a world of difference in playing the first 5 frets, it didn't help out a lot with the action higher up, max a few 64ths lower at the 17th fret, maybe only one. Mine was ok, though about 6/64ths to start with.

I didn't go really low though the nut may still be a bit high around .040 still but it was .060 or something like that.

Sounds like you need a neck shim to give you more bridge adjustment, I have one in mine, or a couple even, it is worth a try and if you don't like it or it doesn't solve your problem you just remove it, no harm done.
