Degaussing

My wife degausses me whenever I leave the house. She doesn't want my overwhelming attraction to get me into trouble. 
We degauss and reuse HD videotape all the time at work. Big 'ol conveyor belt degausser does the job.
I worked at a stereo store in the late '70s and the owner would find an album he liked and beat the crap out of it to the point where the rest of us never wanted to hear it again. He would make a cassette of it and leave it behind the counter and one of the guys would run it through the bulk eraser about ten times, so there would be no trace of the music. When he would try to use the tape, he'd get mad and open a new copy of the album because he could never find the last one, for some odd reason. When we moved the store to the other end of the mall, we tipped the counter over and found about ten copies of 'Feels So Good', which had been dropped on the floor and kicked under the bottom shelf.

I was part of the working party that manhandled the cables for that process once and I'm happy I never had to do it again. Completely wrapping a 600' long ship with 1½" thick copper cables ain't no fun at all, and it wasn't any better when we had to drag all those cables back off the boat either

I would guess that certain parts of certain detectors found in super-colliders might need it periodically.
My old CRT was a pretty high end monitor back in the day. The only reason I haven't gone to LCD is because I have yet to find a higher resolution LCD for under $600. 2048x1536 is a tough resolution to beat. Besides that, it's vintage. We all know that vintage stuff has mojo.
Interesting. Why is that done? Does it make them less susceptible to mines?
OP, I still work with analog tape decks, so I degauss heads, capstans, and rollers routinely.
