Delano

Even though I'm running them passively, the combination of the JMVC4 FE/M2 and the MC4 FE are pretty damn cool…so much so I'm planning on moving them over to a J/MM/J Projekt I have on the backburner.

I love Delano pickups!
The first time I met them, it was on a Marleaux Consat, one of the finest basses I ever laid my hands on. And I immediately realized that a big part of the sound was in the pickups.

Now I have them in my Sandberg Classic 6 and of course these are the pickups I spec’ed for my Maruszczyk build.

For me, simply the best pickups.

I have two Marusczyck Elwood 5 basses, both with Delano pickups. They’re great. I have a bass that I like except for the Fishman Fluance pickups, which I hate. I’m considering my options for replacement, including Delano.

Have any of y'all used those big oval ones?
I have, they were awesome. Played them in the Sandberg Anniversary bass. They sounded great in all configs.

I had a Delano Sonar preamp in another bass and thought it was an excellent preamp as well.

I played a J/MM set in another bass and didn't like them, but may have been another issue, who knows.

Delano Xtenders with Sonar 3/S preamp and pickup configuration switches on my Maruszczyk. As you can see from the Warwick Corvette $$ with MEC pickups beside it, I like the pickup configuration option. The Spectra Pro has Nordstrom pickups with a mid boost center switch and passive switch, and it's very bright compared to the other two (but adding bass at the instrument tames the brightness).

Cool.
I think they look great.
Id love to drop them in a jazz bass, or better yet, a Maruszcyk build.

I hope i enjoy the delano jazz pickups with giant pole pieces - my next build is a set of those with a bart TCT preamp in a short scale bass. Crossing my fingers it sounds pretty bright with stainless steel strings in spite of the scale length

Well, Maruszczyk offers even more advanced preamps than I have, though a bass/mid/treble is enough for my needs, I'm not sure that I'd even use the extra functionality that a mid-frequency selection switch would give me, but ... maybe? I use it on the Spectra but rarely change it... sometimes on the BDDI just because it sounds a bit too "deep" in my usual switch preference.

Anyway, these Xtenders are some of the best sounding pickups I have ever heard, without question. They're warm, have lots of range and the preamp has excellent capability. Not only is this true, but in passive mode, the treble acts as a tone knob and with the controls set to neutral I cannot tell the difference between the preamp sound and the passive sound - there is no noise and there is no inherent boost going on without you adding it with the controls. That's a first for me with an active bass, usually there is a slightly hotter signal coming out of the active preamp even with the controls set to neutral.

Incidentally, the 3/S model of the Sonar preamp is a stacked knob for mid + bass. However, I don't see it explicitly listed on their web site.

I have them in a 6 string, 2 quad coil and enough switching to make use of their features. Lot of option. They are pretty clean and high-fi

I am waiting for the Delano Precision -Alnico and also a Noll bass and treble active EQ with a passive tone and bypass option ( it was not cheap)

I have them in a US Jazz Deluxe, now wired passive. JMVC4 FE/M2 I think is the model. All done by the previous owner. I think they're great. I expected them to be more HiFi or aggressive but they are best described as Fat IMO. Partially due to the humcancelling design perhaps, plenty of top end and bottom end on tap, but not in an aggressive way.

I think people overstate the effect scale length has on the tone, I have 4 short scale basses and only one of them could be described as dark and that is the one that is made out of mahogany.

I'm with Ian Allison, they sound kind of "tubby" to me. Mid focused and deep all the way up the neck. There's almost a chorus sound on D/G strings on frets above 10 with the two short-scales that I play regularly. It's not wrong, it's just different.

The chorus thing is normally because your pickup height is off. I think it's too close to the strjngs if I remember correctly.
