Not my experience with the DL-4. At all.

I experience a somewhat drop in overall volume (hardly audible), and otherwise the bypass isn't terrible. I've gotten several good sounding settings from it, and if used correctly, it can go from bright cutting digital repeats or warm and bassy analog repeats. I have very few complaints about this pedal.

IMO, I would get a BOSS DD-6 and a BOSS DD-3. They are both digital delays, but the DD-3 is analog based so it responds (is tweakable) like an analog delay. BOSS is unsurpassable with durability. This combination is more versatile than just a Line6 DL4 or BOSS DD-20 by themselves and for around the same price new.

i find that the sound of the converters in the DL4 are unacceptable... things are a bit brighter and smaller sounding when playing throught it, and i find there is a loss of depth to the sound.. if you never take it out of your chain, you would never notice, but when i was re-building a pedal board, i kept putting it in line and then taking it out, and the clean tone was better every time without it...

maybe it is more subtle than i made it out to be... but it definitely affects the clean sound, even when the pedal is off, and for me that is a deal breaker.

and, i should add, that the only reason i am so bummed out about the tone thing is that i got some great, really inspiring DELAY sounds out of it, but i can't reconcile myself to use something that has a detrimental affect on my clean bass tone.

Yamaha UD Stomp,if you still can get it (it's out of production,unfortunately).
8 independent delay circuits,no "tone sucking",a little difficult to configure it at first,but once you set it up....heaven!:hyper:
The best of it comes to life if used with a stereo rig or in studio.

John, Did you find any difference in signal loss (when DL4 bypassed) between the mode that leave the delay trials and "true bypass" mode that cuts the trails?

digital pedals always convert the analog to signal to digital, then runs the effects processor on the digital signal, and converts the result to analog. Therefore all digital effects mess with your tone in some sense. The quality of the A/D convertors plays a big part in this.

All of the Boss DD pedals are digital. That's what the DD stands for: Digital Delay.

The DM pedals were bucket brigade based pedals (what most people call analog)
