Well what's your idea of a "conventional band setting"? I know there are plenty of NON-conventional settings that work very well for bass. Just takes an open mind
i agree with the comments about digital for live - i love my analog delay at home, but it just doesn't cut through live, so the dd-3 is on the board.
i have used delay in a 'the edge' style i suppose, on a recent song, where the delayed bass line was the backbone of the song, it's called 'flotsam and jetsam', and it's on bandcamp.vonbartha.com if you fancy a listen (done with the dd-3). we play it live, just needs good monitors for the drummer!!

Delay is a must use on "One of These Days" covers of Pink Floyd. The steady thump of old strings has never sounded better to my ears without proper delay.
In a quieter setting, I have been able to use my analog delay well enough. By quiet, I mean at church, where the volumes are not concert-grade and the instruments are relatively well-behaved.
But, I lean toward subtle use of effects like this.
If the effect level is set very high so it almost sounds like another plucked note it can create really interesting rhythmic possibilities, works wonderfully in the soundscape realm as well.
I use a Boss DD3 guitar delay, mostly for a little color or for intro parts where the bass is stand alone, works great and is cleaner than other delays I've used

The Carbon Copy Sounds great to my ears across the board (with the mod button engaged this adds a slight down pitch shift)....but now that you ask...the two songs in question are played mostly on the A, D and G strings....
I have the Boss DD-7, and use it more as a long-chorus than true delay. Feedback at near-minimum, delay and affected volume just enough to add a chorus'y sound. Switch to reverse delay for solo weirdness!

What about ECHO 600? Don't you think its worth trying? This was inspired by our love of bucket-brigade analog delays. The kind of delay that sweetens sounds and allows dirty feedback looping that dosen't quit. It features tons of headroom, switchable dual outputs, switchable true bypass or buffered output, expression pedal capability for regen control, a recessed LED indicator, a tough lexan face, and is hand made by us. The 3 controls provide complete control over the time, regeneration and mix of the dry/wet signal. In a stereo set-up, the 2nd wet output allows the delay regen to naturally fade out after you turn it off!

JC can really rock the effects...especially delay. I tend to use delay like a reverb that doesn't suck your bass out like crazy. I do have some Toolesque riffs that use it, as well as a David J Haskins inspired bassline that does much the same. My band has me play a lot of bass intros that are pretty intense and the effects help add to the riff...it's a very essential part of my tone in that regard.
