DEMETER HBP-1 Preamp

I ran the HBP-1 through a QSC PL230 and 2 Bergantino HT322 cabs for a couple years with good results. When I switched to a Crest CA9 and the results were much much better. Good power can never be underestimated.

Not to sidetrack this thread, but I've since switched to a Bergantino IP rig & Millennia TD1 so it's probably time for me to sell the HBP-1 if anyone is interested.

As always, the people on TB are what make this my favorite music related site. You guys are the best; knowledgable and informative. I rely on you all...I'm really not much of a tech guy and I learn a lot every time I'm here...and I've been at this for 20 years!!!

Thanks again, Mac!

I bought 3 preamps in one day and A-B-ed the Dickens out of them. My SansAmp PSA 1.1 was the runner-up for the sound I consider to be "MY tone". The RPM was awesome and would be my first choice for sweet Geddy ("The Trees" or "Red Barchetta") style patterns, and the RBI also had a wonderful (but brighter) tone. As it turns out, I went with the SWR Grand Prix with a Ruby Tubes 12AX7ASS which offers the warmth, awesome clarity on the low B and the BALLZ that I was searching for...a very similar tone to what I achieved with the PSA 1.1, but with less gain created hiss.

F/S: 3 Preamps: Tech 21 SansAmp PSA 1.1, SansAmp RPM, SansAmp RBI also selling my BBE MaxCom.

Hey Guys, I'm resurrecting this old thread because I'm back at it. I am assembling another rig and the preamp question is key. I'm wondering if there are any new insights on gear or recent preamp developments that I should investigate. I'm not parting with the rig I put together last year, but I want to make this one different.

My current rig has QSC PLX power, SWR Grand Prix Pre, DBX 166A Comp., BBE 882i Sonic Max, RockTron X-Pression effects, I run Epifani and Bergantino cabs.
Anyway...

I'm going with Crown XTi power this time, I'll continue with the Epi and Bergie cabs, but I'm leaning on going back to the SansAmp PSA-1.1 for this rig.

Eliminate the question of price and (for the sake of space) give me your thoughts on the best rack-mount programmable preamps available. I like the "idea" of having the preamp and effects in the same (rack mount) box. What are my best options. Is there anything better than the PSA-1 or PSA-1.1. Does the Axe-FX unit leave it in the dust?

I am also very willing to consider a preamp and seperate effects unit - what's the best combination?

Thanks in advance.

Mac
