Dented mic

Apologies for this lame question.

Apart from aesthetics, does having a dented grill affect the performance of a microphone?

I have an EV-PL88L microphone that I got given with the vocal PA I bought last year. My daughters were using it and must have dropped the mic which dented the grill.

I thought I could twist the top off and push the dent out but it doesn't twist off and I haven't opened it yet.

There is a possibility that it could impede the motion of the transducer. Plug it in and talk into it. If it sounds normal, all is well.

Thats what the grill is for ...to get dented so the precious bits stay intact.

Thanks guys. I did test it. There was no cracking/distortion etc and I still sound like me. Can't blame the mic for that I spose

One possible problem, more like a minor issue actually. Cardioid mics have a proximity effect. As you get real close to the mic, bass response increases.

The dent may let you get even closer to the element than normal, and increase that bass boost even more than normal.

You can either turn the dent away from your mouth, probably get a new windscreen, or just stay away from the mic a little to compensate, or just turn the low end down a bit.

No big deal either way.

I'm still using the SM58 I bought used in 78 and I couldn't count the number of dings in that wind screen/grill. ..... Still works great. ....... PS: It does come apart somewhere.
