great stuff! don't have to be flashy if you can sound so good, with intent! what a talent.
One of the great present day bassists. Fantastic upright player too. I saw him with Common a few years back and he really brought the material to life.
Derrick and I studied together at Temple Jazz. Besides being an amazing musician, he's also one of the nicest guys in the world, to boot.
i didn't dig his last record, and sadly not into this one either. i don't like the whole bass as a lead/solo instrument type thing. sounds like a nathan east record or something which i don't know, just doesn't jive with me sadly. he's such a talented player and producer, i don't know why he feels the need to take melody on all the tunes. oh well.
Funny, I just discovered this guy a couple days ago and was coming here to start a thread to ask if anyone else is familiar with him. Great player. Very tasteful. Been watching a lot of yt vids of him with Robert Glasper. Didn't know he had an album out, but I'll definitely look into it.
I posted this a while back, cause I really liked all these guys and learned about a ton of new music from this article. It didn't get traction, but seeing this thread, I'll post it again.
