Very true. I had a custom Kohlman bass with EMG's that sounded very close as well. Outside of the Cirrus, I haven't heard anything else that comes close.

I felt like you were 'in the right church, just the wrong pew' with your Sadowsky trying to sound like a Smith. Had that unique mids thing going on that comes with the Modern/Smith/Cirrus pickup placement but something wasn't quite there to say it truly mimics a Smith if that's what you are going for. I'll have to give it a listen through some good headphones later.

I never thought the Modern was a Smith clone tonally, but I have heard people get closer than I do.

Instead of trying to get more scoop out of a mid heavy bass, I leaned into the mids for this slap. I think it works.
