Designing a Bass (one way to do it)

So here is one way to design a bass (or guitar or ????). I've drawn many designs over the years both full size, little scribbles on note pads etc. If I get to the point of wanting to actually build a design then a full size drawing is my best choice.
So I start with a large piece of paper (or other suitable drawing surface) about 52" long and around 18" wide. I've taped smaller pieces together before but I have a roll of paper for the time being. On this is drawn a center line. The perpendicular lines, from left to right are the bridge, 24th fret, 12th fret and nut. For this example I am using a 34" string length. The 12th is halfway and the 24th is 1/4 or 3/4 depending on which end to start from.

Next I draw in some width guide lines. For this drawing I decided on 13.5" for a lower bout width (marked at the bridge location) and 2" narrower for the upper horns (marked at the 24th fret location). These are just references and the actual widths can and may vary.

Next I mark the nut width and the heel width and draw in the fretboard sides. I decided to go with 22 frets on this example so I marked the 22nd fret. Undecided whether this will be bolt on or neck through so I carried the fingerboard lines down through past the bridge.

I drew the end of the fingerboard rounded for this but it could be straight. I put the end at 1/2' from the 22nd fret for this and usually use 3/8" for a flat one. I also put a small line at the 14th fret position as that's usually the minimum I will end a horn and have a strap mount. Depending on design I have fallen between this mark and the 12th fret. If your design can carry it further toward the nut end fine as long as its aesthetically pleasing.

Next step is drawing in a bridge. I drew a generic size (ala Fender) and a dashed outline of a Badass/Kickass/hipshot bridge. Not much is larger except for Rics style. Draw in what ever you are using. Typically I adjust the saddles forward as much as possible and locate the "G" saddle pretty much at the 34" mark. This usually leaves the front edge of the bridge about 1/4" ahead of the bridge line. Some bridges available may need to be positioned differently.

Lastly I draw in pickup position references between the 24th fret and bridge line. I split this up into eight equal segments. The one marked with the asterisk is where most P-bass style pickups are approximately located. That should give you starting point with all the references you need.

This can work for different string lengths, 5 or 6 string, whatever. If you need dimensions visit your local store and bring a tape measure (use appropriate consideration of course). Of course most manufacturers give a lot of specs for their models anyway so finding out is not a big problem these days.

Okay here is where I start. I built a reverse pseudo explorer guitar back in 1983 and always wanted to mod the body for a bass. Didn't think much about it until recently going through some old patterns and I found the original for the guitar. Well I thought I would go through the process here thinking it may help those wondering if they could design something. Here is the guitar template.

And here I transferred the basic design to the drawing. From here I will start to tweak the design for better form and function.

I already made some adjustments to suit the hard points I laid out for a bass.
 
Nice to see that people can still do technical drawing in the CAD era.
You know if CAD could do it full size and as quick as I still can I would gladly use it (I've been involved in CAD). For the most part I have done this for so long I typically don't use drawings anymore but it's still fun to sit and create. Also for the people who don't have the time to invest in learning CAD this is a good way to get closer to creating their bass their way.

I know I said this is a pseudo explorer shape but actually was not really inspired by the explorer. I was doodling once like I do a lot and drew three sets of parallel lines like in this picture. Can you see how this body evolved from that concept? Inspiration can come when you least expect it. Of course it helped to have the explorer to reference when refining the idea. I still have the original doodle somewhere??

Okay time for a little refinement. First I extended the horn out to the 12th fret for now. It seemed a little short for the design and I may extend it further. It all depends on the overall look.

Next I moved to the butt end. It wasn't looking symmetrical even though I drew to equal measured lines for the earlier step. I want to keep it to 13.5 or under so it can fit a standard case. I drew two new reference lines placing the bass side 1/2" closer to the center line and the treble sie 1/2" further away. Basically shifting this end of the body down. Drew in new lines and it looks better to me now. The pencils show where the new reference lins are.

The lower horn looks reasonable at this point so I will leave the drawing as is and come back to it after I draw some headstocks. Here is where I am.

Okay now a headstock. Set my self some parameters. First is fitting into a standard case. Typical cases are 46" inside so I marked that position. This limits to a 2+2 headstock so I will work on that.

Rounded the end and marked approximate positions for tuners.

Using a tuner for reference I located the tuner holes and adjusted the sides.

Then connected to neck and eased some edges.

Not sure yet and have to think about it. The original guitar had inline tuners and if I forgo fitting a standard case that may be better. I will work on that next.
 
I always find headstocks to be much harder to design than bodies. I guess it has to do with how small they are and how many restrictions you are under, especially if you want strings to go straight over the nut. I'm a nut for straight strings.
Headstocks are probably the most difficult. More restrictions and they must complement the overall design. I started this particular one based from the body and not string routing. I'm not a hard fast proponent for straight string pull myself. I can see the possibility of a benefit for non locking nut tremolo applications but otherwise if you consider it in a three dimensional way an angle over the nut is still an angle regardless what direction it goes over the nut. If the nut slot is shaped correctly there should be no benefit or detriment. I used a straight string setup here just to minimize the real estate I am using. I'm even considering having the strings angle inward yet to further reduce the headstock size. But before I do that I am going to investigate an inline arrangement. We will see where we get.
 
I agree with the wider but straight through string run head designs. But so far I have actually built .05 basses, so *** do I know.

My opinion is that when you do not see straight shots it is because the maker insists on having their large logo/plate show unobstructed on the headstock. You know who you are :)

So next I will ignore the length issue and go for inline. The guitar made many moons ago had that configuration and I will try that iteration. First the restrictions keeping straight string path and four inline.
