Double Bass Detuned

I have been kicking myself for not getting the 5 string when I bought my EUB.
Duh, I can detune it. Not the same but it would work for me.
My question is:
Do I need different gauge strings?

I would think so, especially since the band I'm currently in is tuned to A.

String recommendations would also be appreciated.

That's interesting, never thought of using an effect.

I use it as my band drops 1/2 step and it is flawless.
Only thing is for the best results it should be first in the chain. It can be after a volume pedal but it must be the first effect
Also they are not cheap. $180 new
I also do fill in work in a band that drops a whole step and it works great also
You want to make sure you tune up after each set to keep the pitch correct
