detuning a 6-string bass to A: what do i need to know?

One thing that I'm sure would help in achieving good tone on your BTB is the fact that it had a 35" scale length. Granted, some instruments are very well made and can give the same result with a 34" scale length, but a 35" scale does help.

As for string gauge, I would say 130 or anything above should give a decent enough sound at least.
