deviated septum

I had the surgery about four years ago. I broke my nose when I was a kid and didn't even realize it! I was knocked out completely for the surgery and woke up in the recovery room. I went to the hospital at about 7AM and was home by 2:30PM. The hardest part of recovery for me was dealing with the congestion after. I couldn't breath, blow my nose or anything like that. I was stuck with splints up my nose for about a week before I went back to the docs to have it removed. The pressure at times was a little hard to sustain, but they gave me codeine to cope with that. To this day, can I tell a difference? Well I do breathe a lot better through my nose, and my voice is less nasally. If you go through with it, just expect an uncomfortable couple of weeks.

Edit: Just read my post back to myself, it sounds a lot worse than it actually was... DON'T SWEAT IT!!

One other suggestion, don't do it at the height of allergy season. I elected to do it early June and had to sneeze so bad while healing. They kept telling me "whatever you do, don't sneeze until healed up." I was like, huh??? I remember a couple of times being almost in tears because I was afraid to sneeze. The doc told me in that situation use some of the saline rinse to clean the nose. Sounds nasty (was) but kept me from sneezing. LOL

I got the surgery yesterday, and boy is this uncomfortable! I can't sleep or eat comfortably. The pack up my nose is pretty gross too

And I still can't upload a pic onto the TB app, so I'll try to get a post - op pick from my PC later

As far as those doctors are concerned everyone in the world has a deviated septum.
That's what keeps them in the nose job business.

I'm not a doctor but my ex-wife had this done twice...

Basically he's going to break your nose, then with a hammer and chisel and some scraping tools,
go up thru the nostrils and scrape some bone away, then reset the whole thing so it looks straight,
sew up the tissue he had to cut thru, and bandage you up.

You'll be down for the count for about a week, then up and around looking like you've been in a bar fight. Lots of ice packs and meds. After a few weeks you'll look good as new with a straight nose and clearer air passages.

Get a 2nd opinion.

I have it so bad, can't breathe out of one side of my nose. Had surgery. Will NEVER consider it again - the surgery didn't work and it was the most god awful experience of my life. My brother has had it done 3 times, it always "grew back", meaning, as the ENT guy told me, that cartilage tissue in your nose has a sort of memory and doesn't like to be reconoitered. I wish he'd have told me that pre-operatively.

YMMV

Yeah, I had a second opinion. They said this was the best route.

I had the surgery a couple years ago. My deviated septum was discovered when I was getting an MRI for a separate issue. The deviated septum was the result of a broken nose I got in a bicycling accident when I was a kid. The surgery was completely painless. The healing process required me to stay in bed for a few days and do saline rinses 2 or 3 times a day for 2 or 3 weeks. If you need it, I'd say go for it. It wasn't a big deal and I can definitely breathe better now than I did before the surgery.

I got the pack out today, and while it is relieving, my nose its still dripping.

I have the saline drops, but I've never used them before and it tastes like I'm drinking sea water through my nose :(

As I'm sure your doc probably told you, when you go in to see him for the follow up, he'll have to go in and clean out the nose depending on how much it needs it. I was religious about using my saline rinse as prescribed because I knew I didn't want him going back in there and digging around after the fact. Worked like a charm. I went back in for the follow up, he looked in my nose and was surprised to see he didn't have to do any clean up. Point being you really should adhere strictly to the rinsing program to avoid any post op discomfort.

Go into a bar, look for the biggest guy in there, call his mother a bad name, lead with your face when he hits you. Cheaper than surgery.

That's actually how you deviate your septum to begun with :D

After he took the pack out, he used a hose to "suction" out blood, etc. that part really did cause discomfort, so I'm hoping that using the saline spray will prevent that being required.

How often did you rinse with saline? I just did it for the first time and I spit out some gross blood/mucus.. Yuk

I think it was 3 times a day, if I remember correctly. Just follow what the doc prescribed. I used this stuff. Worked like a charm.
