In the spirit of the subreddit Explain Like I’m Five, tell me what a DI does. Do I need one just for jamming with friends or just for playing alone at home? Am I missing something by not having one?

A D.I. (Direct Injection) lets you play your bass (or other instrument) into a P.A. system or audio mixer for recording.
You normally are not able to plug in directly.
Don't need it for home, shouldn't need it for jammin with friends.

More accurately, a DI (direct input) box converts the hi impedance signal coming out of your bass or pedal to a balanced low impedance signal that can be carried to the microphone input on your mixer channel, via an XLR cable.
And, as already explained, you do not need one for jamming or practicing. It is only necessary when you need to get your signal to the PA. The sound engineer will usually have one, but if you have a preference, it doesn’t hurt to have one in your bag.
