DI (Passive/Active) or Mic - Lots of Effects

When we aren't doing our own sound, we generally have the same 10-12 soundmen (I've never seen a woman behind the board yet, so until I do, it's soundmen!). We have established long term relationships with them all.

I have my own mics and stands, so it's not an inconvenience for them at all.

Not really! Good relationships go a long ways!

I do believe that bassists can be their own worst enemies though.

I've never played with a guitarist yet, who would turn around and start adjusting his volume levels on stage. Everything is controlled from a pedalboard, rhythm channel, lead channel, etc. and it's all volume balanced.

But I've seen dozens of bassists turn to their amp and start tweaking. That's what soundcheck is for. Once it's set, leave it alone!

I'm also lucky, that most of the people who run sound for us, are also bassists! There must be some kind of relationship between running sound, and playing bass.

I've never actually seen a sound man, who was also a lead guitarist!

LOL. I've spent a lot of time mixing FOH - for years - though at the moment our guitarist handles most of the mixing duties. Of course, I'm a better mixer than he is, but he's much more accommodating than I am. LOL. It is funny, though, the number of bassists who also do sound.

I have gone back to using a mic. DI is too sterile for me.

Between a REDDI and a Radial J48, no soundguy has ever called my bass tone "Sterile".

In fact, they guys that take both DI and mic the cab (especially if it's the SVT 810) always remark about my tone. I've even had a couple of guys take pics to show me the flat EQ strip of my channel.
