DI vs. DI from amp

Newbie to DI here:

I'd like your experienced recommendations on how to best record DI to a computer.

I want to create WAV or MP3 files that will illustrate the differences between various preamps (Alembic, Aguilar, Navigator, Ampeg, etc). All of these preamps have XLR or TRS out.

My intent is to capture the subtleties between preamps using a single bass, then make them available on my site for comparison listening.

What type of DI or other interfacing is required?

If you're not running out of time (or tracks) in the studio, why not go all the way and record one track DI, one track miked and finally one track via some dist pedal/effect. I read this trick in BassPlayer some years ago and I think they recommended only a small amount of disted signal in the final mix. Of cause you may experiment with the blend ratio of all three tracks...
