dialling in filters and "Twisted (Everyday Hurts)"

A two-parter.

First off I'm totally rubbish and dialling in envelope filters (and synths for that matter). Everything else I'm perfectly fine with, it's just filters and synths that give me a headache. Mainly because I don't understand the circuitry or functions of many of the controls. I also have difficulty identifying exactly what a filter is doing on a recording.

Is there an idiots guide anyone can recommend to dialling in some funky sounds. The best I've managed on my Helix is the Mutant Filter based on the Mu-Tron III. As such, I found the manual which had recommended starting points which have helped.

Second. We're adding Twisted (Everyday Hurts) by Skunk Anansie to our repertoire. I believe it's a bassballs on the recording. I had one of these many years ago and was dead easy to use. However, the Helix doesn't model this particular pedal (I wish it did, it would make my life a lot easier) and I understand from searching the forums that it's a difficult one to match in the Helix. Can anyone give me a pointer to dialling in this particular song's filter with the helix, i.e. which model to use, up or down etc?

Hi! Old post, I now, but I have been playing around with the envelopes on the Helix and, like you, settled on the Mutant. It never go where I wanted it so I tried adding a parallel loop on the Helix and played around with other filters and such. This has gotten sounds from subtle to completely out of control. It may work for you.

For BassBalls, my understanding is its a dual envelope filter/follower...so again, I put two envelopes back to back on the same channel and then add in some dirt as a third block. Could be a BassBalls, maybe so maybe not, but I do like it!
