Diary of a Bassist #23: Where's Jim Carrey?

Hey folks, for those new to the diary, I am a middle aged musician enjoying somewhat of a musical renaissance, including finally picking up the bass as a secondary instrument. I have been learning mostly on the fly gigging with 2-3 others, & documenting my gigs with brief writeups. See the links to past entries below!

Little Sunday jam with Frank & Jim. Matt (drummer) is OOC with a *nasty* flu that's rampaging through the local population, so we were a trio.

Things went mostly well. We covered a bunch of genres, from celtic, reggae, blues, rock, and country. I found the most success with staccato quarter note lines that Frank said are called "one-two" lines. An example would be "Hey Mr. Bobby", that I played as something like:

(two bars shown)

G|--------------------------
D|--------------------------
A|--7-----7--------7--5-----
E|-----7-----7--5--------5--

Sometimes switching to:

G|------------------------------
D|------------------------------
A|--7-----7---------7--5-------
E|-----7-----7-7--5-------5-5--

I found I recovered more quickly/cleanly from mistakes, which has been a trend, and felt more comfortable doing vocals. Frank complimented me a couple of times on these recoveries, where I barely lost the beat. I think I kept us together a couple of times when things were up on two wheels around a corner.

I struggled with incorporating the low B on my Stingray5, as I found the low C through D sometimes overpowered the sound. I used the low Eb through G more often, to let me play up in those positions. I am definitely growing to appreciate the low B string, even if I don't use it as much as I likely should.

I was a *little* less adventurous in lines, as we played some "deeper" cuts, and without the drummer there, I didn't feel as free to experiment with more complex lines. It was a nice tight 90 minutes, and I was glad to get to play some more complex lines for me. We didn't do any of our "eighth notes" songs, such as With or Without You, Zombie, etc. I didn't use a pick at all. I am finding I really enjoy lines where one note leads into another, they're super rewarding! Gear wise, I have added an MXR octaver that I will use here and there, but I think I am keeping it just to that, and maybe a light overdrive for some of the rock songs. I prefer to keep the bass tone clean, and think that's the best for my development as a player.

Not a very interesting Diary entry I imagine, not a lot of drama tonight, just some solid tunes and fun times!
