The bass on this video looks defretted, but Jeff Andrews never sounds like he is playing fretless to me. He sounds like he is favoring the bridge pickup on a fretted bass.

The bass on this video looks defretted, but Jeff Andrews never sounds like he is playing fretless to me. He sounds like he is favoring the bridge pickup on a fretted bass.
Don't know if this is fretted or fretless,sounds like a fretted to me. Anyway,Jeff definitely played some fretless bass on a couple of Special EFX songs...
I think that may be Mark Egan on fretless.
I had this disc.
I lent it to a friend and it never came back!
They both play on the album,but according to my cd's booklet,Jeff Andrews plays on this tune. To me,sounds a little different to Mark's tone or playing...great part,anyway. I know how it is,I lost a couple of discs I loved thanks to some people who never gave them back to me :-(

Because of this thread I broke out that CD, it's been about 20 years since I listened to it even harder for me to believe that is was 33 years since it came out, yeesh I'm old. And it is Andrews on bass for Vacation For Life. I dig these threads!
Found it in a cd store something like 12 years ago,price was still around 40 euros...d'oh! Bought it anyway,never regretted it...great album !

I had to look at that four times. It's not a defret. But damn, it took some staring and pausing to be sure. Looks like he's got those little bitty "vintage style" (mando/banjo) frets on it.
The other "tell" is watching where his left-hand fingers land. He plays like a fretless guy playing a fretted, right behind the fret, but occasionally lands right "on the dot" which should sound out of tune. It doesn't.

You mean the Mike Stern band? Check out "upside downside" and "between the lines",you won't regret it ;-)
I loved/love Jeff's playing.His tone/ideas just made it for me.Still have some of those old Stern vinyls.Learned a lot from him for sure.
THAT is some tasteful, musically-rich playing. News to no one on this thread I'm sure. I heard actual ideas in that solo, not just look-at-me musical athletics.

Yes favoring that bridge J pickup and plucking by the bridge gives him that real staccato attack and even though he's not playing fretless, it does sound burpy and a little Jaco-esqe--a sound I associate with fretless.
No...I mean Chieli Minucci and Special EFX.

Sorry man,I thought you were talking about Stern! Special EFX...a part from this one,my favorite is "modern manners"...great playing from both Mark Egan and Jeff Andrews! And,most of all,great tunes
