Did Pino Play on The Weakness In Me?

Just listening to some early Pino stuff - and came across a tune called The Weakness In Me by Joan Armatrading. It has all the hallmarks of 80s Pino - fretless, harmonics, similar kind of fills.

But it was recorded in 1982. So it might be slightly too early for Pino...anyone shed any light?

Hey Paul -

Not sure if Pino played on the original but this just caught my eye as I've been playing that track on tour this year. It's such a powerful track, with heartbreaking lyrics. Good call indeed. Check it out anyone that isn't familiar with it.

Being a big Pino fan, I did a search on allmusic.com.
Apparently it could be either Tony Levin or Robbie Shakespeare.

From your description (haven't heard it myself) I'd guess mr. Levin.

Whoever it is they're doing a killer job. If you like Pino's work with Paul Young or Don Henley (his fretless stuff) you should go check this out. It's in a similar vein. Very, very tasteful. Very cool.

(Seven years later...) Was just asking myself that same question! Not the easiest question to answer, but it appears it was Tony Levin. His playing on that song set the foundation for my fretless playing decades ago.

Joan Armatrading wrote some wonderful tunes.

Always seemed to have excellent Musicians and Production around her to.

"Love And Affection" is staggeringly great lyric.

The answer to the question is simple as I have the original vinyl album.
As already mentioned, it's Tony Levin.

Reason for responding is how much I was touched by both the lyrics and the bass-lines. I played it again after several years, reminded of her by something on the radio.

I immediately picked 'Weakness'. First thought was 'Oh yes, that story'. Then came the bass, like a warm blanket.

I also wondered about Paladino, but read Levin on the sleeve. That rung a bell, but I had to remind myself on the web about him.

In short: gorgeous piece.

Of course I played the rest of the album afterwards. Literally dusting off my player first.
