Did your parents play an instrument too?

my dad is a diehard speed-metal lead guitarist. his old band, Borderline were sorta well known in Colorado.

Both my parents are musicians and I grew up playing in a family band. My mom can seemingly play anything once she familiarizes herself with it. I wish that were true in my case, but thus far, not.

Yeah, both my parents are musicians. In fact they met as students at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music! My Dad has played trumpet professionally since he was 17. He's 83 now and still jammin' away. My maternal grandmother was a professional concert pianist and pipe organist.

I suppose there is a genetic component involved, but I wonder if it has more to do with being exposed to music as a child. My sister and I heard everything from Jazz to Classical as kids. When we were five and six years old we were singing show tunes! I will always thank my parents for exposing us to all types and styles of music as children. I think that is the greatest thing you can do for kids as a parent.

Both of my parents haven't even touched a music instrument.My father don't know what i am playing he thinks it of a guitar pffff

My father was an accomplished Disco/House DJ/Producer back in the late 70's early 80's. He even owned a discotheque and a record store at one point. During the 70's he also played guitar in a few funk bands, what he describes as "Quick riffs before the damn BASS takes over"

Mother played lapsteel, and switched to resonators with a pick. She still plays and even performs once in awhile with an "old group of friends to keep the blues alive"

I agree about the genetic component. This apple certainly hasn't fallen far from the tree, even if I tried so damn hard not to. With out all the great exposure from both my parents, I don't think I would be able to appreciate music quite the same.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately, as when I talk to people my own age about music, (who should know better) that just mindlessly follow whatever the media shoves down their throat. There's nothing like having a guy in his late 30's tell you about how much talent Katie Perry or the Jonas Brothers have. It makes me wonder what kind of upbringing these people had.

My dad played guitar.
My mother plays piano and sings and has her degrees in Music and Music Education.
My siblings play piano, violin, flute, drums, etc., etc.

My Dad plays guitar and my Mom plays piano(though not really so much since I was a kid). Used to jam with Dad all the time but now we live on opposite sides of the country.

I'd like to thank everyone who's responded to this thread. We've heard from all types, DB players, EB players, Metal, Country, Classical, Latin, Jazz, Funk, Bluegrass..even Classical Japanese, and I think it's the first thread I've read, where no-one has taken a piece out of some-one for whatever reason. Nice to see, 'One big happy family of musicians'.

Neither of my parents play any sort of instrument, although my mum is keen to learn some piano if she ever gets any spare time. My 3 sisters and I all play or have played some form of music though, one played flute, one is a very good piano, clarinet and recorder player, one is a very skilled percussionist and i play bass, and a little guitar.

Definitely musical skill in the family, but not from mum and dad it would seem
