Difference between Ampeg SVT VR and SVT CL?

Well there's way more differences than just that. The preamp and driver tubes are different. Different versions of the same thing, since 12DW7's are just half 12AX7, half 12AU7, and 12BH7's are half a 12AU7. But they are different. Still, at the end of the day, the differences aren't important since they sound the same.

different parts to get the same sound.. the voltage mod is just gives a similar mojo to the og amp.. tube amps have a voltage that they work best at it's different for each amp. and using a variac you can set that voltage.. the modern protection circuit in the amp don't allow that. 112-117 is a sweet spot for a lot of tube amps. if want to take advantage of the power tube distortion use a attenuator. between the amp and cabinet.

Honestly most bassist won't go to all this trouble. but I'm on the nerd side. and do lots of research. lol
if I really want to mod an svt-vr I would take out the second channel to save on weight. put the high pass filter in it. put some cyro tunsol tubes in it. give it auto biasing too. figure out a quieter fan too.

Old thread, but I figured I’d revive rather than start new. I’m getting an SVT-cL and want to get a heritage cab. Could the heritage 4x10 handle all the power or would I damage the cab?

It would definitely handle all its clean power. However, getting into the distortion could possibly cause it to get damaged at some point. Not exactly sure where that point is, but I would work up slowly to it and not just go for it.

I’ve been reading this thread for about a month now to decide on what svt I should get. Everyone on here was very helpful on this decision. The way I decided ended up taking a test run on the ampeg plug-in out of the three amps the vr stood out I know the ones on the plug in are the American made ones but didn’t care on where it was made just how it sit in a mix. As much as I liked the svt 4 I would never use half of the knobs or eq which would be a waste the classic in the mix got muddy quick but the vr really stood out worked real well with a p bass and a 2x12 bass cab. Needless to say I’m now the proud owner of a vr out of the box was amazing the weight is nothing to complain about the fan tho holy crap! I think I’ll stick with the direct recording for that. All in all very happy and thankful for everyone’s advice on the svt.

You can always put the head in a closet, away from the mic’ed cab, for recording.
Blend with DI to taste and you got an amazing sound there
