Difference between bass and guitar cables?

I'd actually be interested in hearing a recording of each type of cable run through a bass, guitar, keys, etc and actually hear if there is any, even subtle, changes. I'd imagine someone would have done this by now.

Actually you'd need a scope - but yeah, even then you won't see any magic cable difference. But - Monster cable is built well.

Plenty of other brands that will do the same but are much less expensive.

(I also like/use LiveWire and PlanetWaves cables too).

But, "for me" none of the others have lasted the test of time like Monster has "yet" either (I've only been using LW & PW for about 10 years) - I should know in about another 20 years - or maybe sooner if one fails.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've purchased two Monster cables in my lifetime and both of them were in the trash within a year. Never again and I feel ripped off. What a joke. Monster panders to the uninformed Best Buy consumer, that's my opinion, and if you are into it, good luck to you. But...why?

I'm not a fan of Monster, but I think they solved this particular problem many years ago, and they replaced cables for anyone who asked for a replacement cable at the time. ...too bad I didn't ask them to pay for my jack replacement.

+1 I love their patch cables but then again I'm not constantly plugging and unplugging my cables either so I've never had a problem.

Wow, this thread took a few twists and turns. FWIW, I use rapco instrument cables and LiveWire and Monster mic cables. The first monster cable I bought and some weird noise issue, so I took it and exchanged it, an bought a couple of LiveWire ones to cover myself. Well, they all have done well since then :) I have seen many other cheap cables bite the dust during this time, so yeah for mic cables, I will be sticking with the Monster cables, they don't move around in the mic, this no noise when moving around (like cheap cables do).

Now everyone knows that Bass cables are longer and have more girth :hiding:

I am not a Monster fan, but that is all I own and the only reason is the lifetime warranty. I have had cable ends break (my fault) brought it in to GC and they just give me a brand new one! My friend found a OLD monster cable and we decided to say it was faulty just to get a new one, no questions asked we got a new one. Now given this was maybe 2 years ago this is why I do not mind the extra cash and these and I like that they feel like a good build unlike Mogami which are flimsy (to me). Having said that, I have no heard a difference in tone (i own the "bass" cable and a regular "instrument" cable from Monster) they sound the same.

I have heard that their warranty program now sucks, but I have no confirmation on that. Maybe I should break a cable and find out..haha

Anyways I have had no problems with Monster other than paying a more for their products. I do not recommend them for their price, but for their warranty I do. I also believe Mogami offers the same warranty. Bottom line, they are just more expensive!

I have had no issue with the size of the 1/4 tip, and I have had them for 10 yrs. No jacks broken or loosened.

I continue to buy Monster because they have always worked for me, should I opt out and buy a cheaper (price) cable? Sure, but I do not see a reason to. I do not mind paying extra for piece of mind.

In my local big box store I can take in a bad monster cable and have it replaced on the spot no question asked. Yes I know others also offer lifetime warentees but none that come with the same convience of the monsters.

In my local store monsters are no more expensive than any other preimum cable. Yes there are certain monster cables are extreemly expenisve but others are very comparable to their competors.

I have the monster bass cable and the guitar monster cable. The bass cable cuts some of the highs and is more muted then the guitar monster. Not sure its any better but i do like the warranty to get freebies if they break.

I bought a cheap Swamp cable online, plugged it into my brand new bass and brand new Boss ME50B and after a few hours, the plug broke off in the jack of the ME50B!!! Wild panic, then I calmly held a magnet at the jack opening and it came out in one go!

Swamp offered to replace the cable but I told them I wouldn't insert their crap cables anywhere except the manager's %$#@. i got a refund hehe.

Im a fan of monster cables, just bought out the last of what 2 stores had for the .75ft gold ended prolink cables, 4 of them to be exact, only because I didnt like the way the new version looked compared to the older ones...I also own one of the monster bass cables, I have used both,no difference. The nice thing about monster cables is the replacement policy, doesnt matter if you bought, traded , stole,or even got it at a murder scene, you bring them a broken cable, you get a new one,for life.....dont know how true this is but a salesperson at a music store said I can bring in a monster cable, cut it up in front of him and he will give me a replacement, pretty sure the lifetime gaurantee is what you pay for.

I prefer the 4 conductor (two twisted pair) Mogami, because it is very quiet and durable. Originally I had the cable wired with a floating ground, but that didn't work with basses with battery powered preamps - wasted effort. I had a multi strand Monster cable once - the kind that has different bundles of different size wires in it, and it didn't sound any better than the Mogami. I got the Monster cable free, from a studio owner who bought a piece to run with his AKG C12. He said he couldn't hear any improvement over the Mogami with his C12, either.
