Differences between SX short scale P and J basses?

I'm new to the bass and I've been playing my son's Ibanez soundgear but I really want a shortscale. I see Rondo has some of the short scale P basses in stock. I'm trying to decide if I should get the P or hope for a J in the near future.

Other than the J having another pickup are there any other differences that make one more desirable than the other. It would seem having another pickup, with it's tone options, would make the J the logical choice. So why do so many choose the P?

its the reason why people like pbasses of jazz basses. it the tone. jazz is going to sound like a jazz and p with a p.. a pbass isnt going to sound like a jazz and the jazz isnt going to sound like a p.
