Different woods?

Hello! I was recently in contact with Steve Wishnevsky talking about one of my many dream basses. Only problem is, wood. I can not decide.

I like to slap. I LOVE to slap. I really love punch, but with great mids and trebles. But I still need something to produce the lows, but keep em tight. I hate boomy lows. So here are my options.. can you describe the sound of each in a solid body bass?

Softwoods: (solid body)
Cedar

Hardwoods:
Maple
Poplar-hardwood? softwood?
Cocobolo

I figured this question was OK because I have never really seen Maple or Cocobolo or Cedar addressed as a body wood.

There are a few builds around here with maple, cocobolo, etc. I think I've even seen cedar used. I woundn't use cedar because it's a soft wood. But so is redwood and it's been used, you just need to use a hard sealer on it.

I checked your site... how much do you charge for an average 4 string custom bass? As in, what are the cheapest basses you make?

B/P, what sort of cedar are you talking about, there are several. And the weight varies wildly.
Would you cover the top with something other than cedar?

FYI: You do not get on a builder's good side by asking "How little can I spend to have you work a whole bunch?"

The polite method would be to ask "what price do your 4 string basses start at"" and ask it in a PM, I believe that the rules of the forum are designed so they can't really advertise their own companies directly in here.

I have a neck through cocobolo wood bass. The sound is very dark and and mellow.

Maple would make an ideal slap bass wood. I had a maple bodied bass once and it was very much a high and midrange sounding bass, perfect for slap.

For a tight but still full low end, try EA cabs. The treble is very pleasant and slap friendly.
