DigiTech BP8 club

Just bought a BP-8 off of ebay a couple of weeks ago. It was sold as untested and no power supply, but i bought one on a chance and it worked. I'm trying to figure it all out. I printed all the cheatsheets and a manual. I have a couple questions. First off it seems kind of quiet, I've been plugging the high or low into my amps effects return. Should I do that way or go right into the input? Also it being older how do I know when the 12AX7 tube inside needs replacing? Should I do it just for good measure? It glows a dim orange when the unit is on, is that good or should it be brighter?
The tube in mine has always glowed orange so I think you are fine, it is not running at full voltage to see a nice blue glow. The output on mine has always been hot enough to drive a power amp into a speaker or an input into a mixer with out any noise or problems but it has been sitting idle for a bit. Nice to see some interest in the old beastly BP8
