Digitech or Boss?

I'm looking to get a bit of overdrive to my bass sound but I'm not sure whether to get the Boss ODB 3 or the Digitech Overdrive/Distortion pedal.

I want something that keeps the lowend and does give too much of a 'metal' sound.

Any advice?

I've never had *any* problems with low-end loss with the Boss. In fact, I can set it to add quite a bit of low end back into the mix. I took it off my board a while ago, btu I'm thinking about putting it back on simply because it held the low end so well... Sorry, syciprider, but I'm wondering if you've actually used an ODB-3 much :)

On the other hand, the Digitech sucks monkey balls IMO. Sure, you can get a lot of tones out of it, but none of them are really all that good. Granted, it does manage to keep pretty good low-end also, though.

Bottom line: Go with the BOSS. Sure, it's a bit more limiting as far as how many distortion types you can get with it, but in sound quality it blows the DigiTech out of the water.

But really, if you can, go try out both of these pedals and pick the one YOU like best.

Oh yeah I've tried both. They were my first dist A/B test. The ODB is only good for copping that Around the World intro but just about any decent dist pedal can do that just as good. Anyhoo, it sounds tinny. But if you haven't tried anything else then I guess it's good enough.

And judging by your statement, it seems that you yourself haven't tried both side by side and are just speaking in defense of your Boss.

If i can please you DONT buy DIGITECH, the biggest problem with this effect is that its great alone but with band it grow you deep under ground....i think its caused by digital circuit, and another MINUS for digitech its that its not able to use it with battery - oh sorry its posible but only for about half hour.... even manufacter confes on this due used digi technology
Try both if you can but that "grow" effect of digitech its REAL and i am really sad for that because i liked the sound of the pedal in few settings but when its not usable in band....its not usable at all - maybe in studio but im not daily ( either weekly or monthly :-D ) studio user so i sell it.....

Has VL fixed their problem of delivering lots of DOA units? I personally ran into four Sparkle Drives which were dead OOTB. I really liked the way the SD sounds but the QC worried me. I got a Sansamp GT2 intead for my mild OD needs.

I used to own an ODB-3.... well I still do, just it's dead...

I spent a fair amount of time with the Digitech unit...

I hate both of them... They sound to dry to me. The ODB just seems to make noise, which is ok while you are playing, but if you aren't at that moment, it's pretty bad...

I use an EHX Hot Tubes for dirty crunchy sounds, and an EHX Big Muff Pi for full on distorted fuzz sounds.

For what you'll spend on either the ODB-3 or the Digitech, get a Big Muff... you'll get some nice distortion that'll blow either one away.

Better yet, save your cash for a bit, and get an English Muff'n...
