Dimarzio Model J Setup help

So I just got my bass back with Dim's Model J's and I noticed that the pups are higher than the fret board causing my strings to bounce off the magnets instead of the 22nd fret. I tried pushing down on the pups to see if there was foam under them but to no avail because I didn't want to apply breaking force. So I think there is either a piece of wood under the pups, the screws are holding them at that height, or the actual rod is that tall.
I just got my bass back and really don't want to have to unstring it and pop the hood so does any one know what is under there?

I just got them to go down but i used alot of torque on the screwdriver and want to be sure this isnt bad.

i don't have any problem with my jazz bass when i install a set of dimarzio dp123 set. i told the guy ti raise the pup height too.

Is it just the pickup causing the problem?

Take it back to the shop and see what the guy can do about it.

When the string hits the pickup it creates a horrible ping

Many people use a pretty dense foam beneath the pup (not much room and too many screws to use springs). If your route isn't very deep, that could make it difficult to lower them. Solution if that is the case: use less dense foam, or a thinner piece of foam.

I gather someone else installed these? Is there something that prevents you from making a return visit so that whomever did the work can (re)do it correctly?

EDIT: Be careful about torquing those screws - if you round out the slots, you will have a VERY difficult time removing them

So I took the guard off, removed the pups... the foam in my opinion isnt dense it's just at the point where its so compacted that I have to use alot of torque, and when I mean torque I mean torque. I am on the verge of stripping the screws. I think I will take it back to GC....

ugh now I have to put everything back in.

Also the stock pups where wider than the new ones so the screws are bowing out like a tent.

It's a fact that Model Js have more height than standard pickups for some reason. You could take the foam out completely and see if that permits you to lower the pickups far enough.
