I was on the Dimarzio site and it said that these pickups came out in 1979 but I also hear that they were a very popular Fender replacement pup during the 70's. Does anybody know the truth?

1979. The Model P was a very popular replacement in the 70s. The reason that the J wasn't out then was most people played Precision basses, and no so much Jazzes. Even then the Model P was introduced in 1977. So it was the late 70s for both of them. I bought several Model Ps when they first came out.
DiMarzio had made mostly guitar pickups up until then, the Super Distortion humbucker was released in 1972.
