Dimensions for pickup placement

I will be ordering a template and the manufacturer will cut out my pickup holes. They asked me where I want them placed, I am using emg35 sized pups. Is there a standard placement or (as I assume) is it completely up to preference?

I have a Spector with emg35 that I can measure, but if there was a formula / standard for the placement that would be awesome.

There is no such thing as standard pickup placement. Closer to the bridge sounds brighter and closer to the nec darker. Whatever sound suits you is up to you.

I agree except to add that history can be a good teacher. There is no standard requirement, but P, J, MM-SR and mudbucker-neck positions serve as useful references.

Not forgetting Rick positions. For certain sound these all are usable pickup positions.
