I played a front porch gig tonite, my first since the shutdown*. I made $15 in tips, w00t!
The host's girlfriend has a P-bass, a Galveston, as in the island town in Texas, I guess.
This Galveston was given to her by an acquaintance and I don't think it's ever seen a proper setup. I think a proper setup might cost more than this poor bass is worth.
She wanted me to play bass so she could play fiddle (she's a Very Good fiddle player.) I play with this bunch regularly, so I knew what to expect, musically. Both Kinds.
I've played this bass once before. It's not great. Myriad issues.
So I figured I could go to the porch gig without a bass and just play the Galveston.
But the strings! They were just regular roundwounds. But they were killing me! They were like sandpaper. Years of funk, and not the good kind. They didn't appear to be Very Dirty or anything, but you could feel the roughness.
I've left roundwound strings on my basses for Very Long Periods of Time. But I've never, ever experienced anything like this. It was absolutely fatiguing.
You can bet I'm bringing one of my flock next time.
