Disappointed with DR Jonas Hellborg Strings

These strings are great. I just put them on my jazz bass. They're bright but have no zing at all. It's hard to describe. Just a very clean sound.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the models of DR strings come with silk wrap - they're all pure metal. I like that look - it's one of the things I like about DRs in general.

Yeah but they are tapered, that's why they fit in small tuners (and why you have to buy different sets for different scale length).

Just to clarify, 'tapered' usually means tapered at the bridge, which DR's are not.

All larger bass strings are tapered at the tuner, otherwise they wouldn't go around the posts.

I was a little alarmed at first when I saw this, but the bare core held around the tuning post just fine.

I just put a set on my Bacchus 24DX4

The strings were a little bit harder to wind. But hardly an issue.

I usually play 45 - 105.

I have been using dunlop super bright nickels on my fretted and rotosound on my fretles "jazz".

Really happy with that setup.

But i was intrigued with the JH string reviews.

I like them.

A lot. They feel great and sit on mixes amazingly well.

Hello all.
After speaking with Jonas this past weekend here at DR, and fielding questions about the need for an alternative for smaller tuners, we have adjusted the winding length, and all the sets now offer an 'exposed core' at the end of the string, at 37 3/4" length. The 'taper' is now at the same distance from the ball end as all of our other sets, not including our short scale (32") Hi Beam and Extra Long Scale LMR-45 Hi Beam (40").

Zombie thread .. this was an honest reply stating, however, that there could effectively be a problem in winding the strings around the shaft of small tuning pegs … so the OP made sense in general, although the thread’s title wasn’t clear and I’m still trying to understand what these strings truly have to offer
