Yeah, but Les Pauls have the most fragile headstocks ever made. I swear I have seen a Les Paul headstock snapped off by just looking at it crosseyed...

Yeah, they've been known to crack pretty easily - still, Les Pauls ARE the sound of rock and roll, IMO...

This thread makes me wanna throw my cheap bago away and get a hardcase, my Koa winged Carvin is more important than most people to me.

Hardshell cases are always a decent idea, but they're not going to withstand being run over... mine didn't. There's only so much protection a case can give. Myself, I use a gig bag and a good deal more caution than I used to.
