Dishwasher

Just a reminder, steel rusts.
Another reminder, the core of strings is made of steel.
It doesn't appear to be too bright of an idea.

Tell me, then, what silverware is made of? I was always under the impression it was stainless steel. And whisks? And paring knives? And some pans? Or what about strainers? How does that stuff not rust? I always hought that the high temps and heated drying evaporates enough water. Unless someone can say otherwise, and besides the obvious coating and treatment. Our kitchenware is many year old and is still rust free. Even with heavy use...
 
Stainless steel comes in many forms and qualities, neither is permanently stainless although some of them appear to be.
In the case of bass strings, you need to attain a very high resistance to traction while maintaining ductility. One cheap way to do it is to severely reduce the amount of chrome in you alloy, which leads to less resistance to corrosion.
Never had rusty old strings ?
 
Bass string windings are S/S, nickel, NPS, , copper-coated, poly-coated, etc,
BUT- the core is high-carbon steel: the only material with the magnetic properties req'd that can take the tension and flexing under load of stress at pitch.
Try cleaning high-carbon (spring) steel with alcohol or anything that eliminates a protective coating and see how long it resists rust.
When the rusting starts, the ability to resist the req'd tension decreases, then failure.
I doubt that string makers strip all the manufacturing lube (req'd for rollers, winders, etc) before they package and sell the product.
Anyone have a way to clean the windings w/o also cleaning the core?
I think (IMO[H]......) that barring the loading of the windings with sweat (containing acids, salts, etc) oils, or other, that one of the leading causes of strings going 'dead' is from wear, wrap-to-wrap, against each other, and they 'settle' losing their ability to move and transfer wave motion as effectively as when new. The first thing lost is harmonic content.
 
Well, I have my old strings in the dishwasher as I am typing this, along with a few other items that could use cleaning. We'll see how this turns out. I couldn't use any of the extra features with the one-hour-wash, so I have it set on pots and pans. Vinegar in the prewash, vinegar and a gelpack thingie in the main wash. Rinse aid knob thingie turned to max. Wish me luck!
