Im no fan of the BOSE system ... but you will hear many who will tell us that IS the solution.

Phil Jones showed a similar system at NAMM.

Vertical stacking has been around for years, (we stacked many an Advent home stereo speaker back in the day)

In pro PA it is the norm ... has been for years.

Three way systems, been around forever too.

Still it's not for everyone, there is no one solution.

I dig the sound of the Bose thing, but for me the problem is their subs not the higher stuff. Plug a 5-string bass into one of those things and watch it sound like a pack of dogs that got into a case of chili.

$2 mid drivers I can accept, $12.50 subwoofer driver I cannot

I agree - the Bose is OK except the subs, but Bose won't release measurements. And nobody seems to want to measure them. Not to be OT, but there are alternatives now like the Fishman Solo Amp. I don't know why there are not many more competitors.

The Phil Jones system looks a lot better, the midbass drivers may be large enough so that they can cross down around 100Hz where they should be and the sub section isn't a tinker toy. But until they get a manual up it's all conjecture.

Ideally, amps are place on the sides of the stage, pointed in, and used only as monitors. Let the PA do the heavy lifting.

My guitarist used his 2x12 verically at our last gig like this (I use a 4x10; sorry Bill!), and it was the best on-stage sound we had. Could be a variety of things (our singer was using a Beta 58 instead of her condensor, and it was much better with feedback rejection), but there is definitely something to vertical alignment.

That looks bad. At least for Home Theater THX certification is around for those who want to sink as much money as a Bose system costs

... Convert all the bass players to vertical ... then you gotta work on the guitar guys!

Great article. I've always been completely underwhelmed with Bose speakers (not so much for movies, but definitely for music), which is why my Cambridge Soundworks towers have dual 8" woofers, 6.5" squawkers, and 1" silk dome tweeters...of course, they do weigh like 75 lbs each!!
