I have some DIY experience, and I'm up for more, and that's perfect since I just joined a second band. I'm thinking about building myself a lightweight 2x10 cab. I've been searching the forum and reading up on the vertical vs horizontal alignment and dispersion issues. I got a nice spreadsheet for Excel and some files from a friend and started simulating different designs.
So, here's why vertical alignment beats horizontal, this is a simulation of 2x Eminence Deltalite 10's 28 cm apart, listening distance of 2 meters plus 2 meters horizontal panning (45 degrees). Grey is horizontal alignment of drivers, and black vertical.

Much more even projection of the mids. However, after studying the options, I realized that this is when the listener has their ear level with the bottom driver. If I lie down on the stage 45 degrees from the cab, I'll get great mids, but what happens while standing 45 degrees away?
As a guesstimate, I experimented with 130 cm listening height (height between centre of bottom driver and ear leaving room for ports and such). Here is the same graph as before, the difference being ear at 130 cm instead of 0 cm, everything else the same:

Now both results seem crappy. As a final test, i tried a 45 degree configuration, the drivers 28 cm apart diagonally (20cm x 20 cm y), and here are the results at 2m distance, 2m pan, 1,3 m height - this time vertical is gray and diagonally is black:

This is only true for one side of the cab. Panning 2m to the other side gives this result (vertical alignment is the same both ways):

With the cab on the floor, diagonal alignment of the drivers seems to beat vertical, assuming the cab is on one side of the stage, and the bass player only moves away from it in one direction.
Any comments about this? Are my guesses correct, or am I talking out of my behind?
Sure, if you use the cabinet for PA with the drivers at ear level for the audience, and/or stack several cabs, vertical seems like the way to go, but when I play I only use my rig as a form of monitor for myself and the others on stage and let the PA make the sound for the audience, and I can always choose what side of the drums I want to put my rig.

... Convert all the bass players to vertical ... then you gotta work on the guitar guys!
