i've been listening to loads of clips on the internet and can't seem to find anything that sounds like it'd get the sound i want without modding them, i was recommended the mxr blowtorch but that sounds way to muddy for my liking. i'm looking for something with ALOT of punch and growl, alot of beef in other words any recomendations?

The punchiest OD/distortion I've ever tried was the Invalid Link Removed. It doesn't do over-the-top distortion, but it was surprisingly punchy!

I have your same problem. I fixed it buy doing the following.

Bass ---Morley ABbox----

A side goes to tube preamp channel A

B side goes to distortion of choice--- and then to Tube Pre channel B

both go to your amp.

Mix your clean and dirty sound. Some pedals have a blend knob such as the Programmable bass DI by Tech 21. Fantastic pedal. That IMO is the one Key factor to a good sound.... just like in the studio. They want your dry sound and your effected sound so that you can mix in your dry for punch and your effected for whatever else you want to do.

I really liked the Russian Muff when I tried it out at guitar center with a MIM jazz. It sounded really good, tone was not as muddy or fuzzy as most other distortion pedals out there. The American muff is a bit more bassy while the Russian is more mid/treble oriented I found. I personally don't like MXR pedals in general because I do find most of them to be too fuzzy for my tastes.

any sound clips of the blackbox x-ray bass? i have a russian muff but it hasn't quite got that punch i want needs more lows ;o how does the ab thing work exactly?

The best tone I have ever had is a MIJ P bass run through a Tech 21 PDDI with the mids boosted, through to a russian big muff. The russian on it's own can be a bit muddy but with that tone the big muff sings.

Also, for a less biting fuzz, just roll the tone control off

Often, what's driving the pedal is more important for punch, IMO. Try out a few overdrive or distortion pedals that seem appealing to you with your bass, emphasizing your NECK pickup.

Even how you play can affect it. There's less "punch" and bass depth to work with if you play near the bridge.

As for punchy... I think the MXR Blowtorch is pretty punchy for a fuzz, but not everyone likes the tone. But for a punchy overdrive... aim for something that emphasizes the mids!

BTW, is there a song in mind that has that sound you're looking for? An actual audible guide would make a huge difference in our ability to help you.
