Double Bass DIY bass stand (made from pallet)

Hello All,

I needed to hold 3 basses, but surely could not afford to buy 3 $70+ stand. I am a middle and high school orchestra director so I sometimes have to figure another way of doing things than normal. So I decided to build one out of wood. The easiest without much cutting: Pallets. There will be many picture to help guide you in this quest.

Step 1. Select to pallet according to the number and size of basses you will be handling. Look at your local stores trash area for a pallet. Stay away from big chains such as walmart, lowes, home depot: they reuse theirs. I retrieved mine from a local hardware store. If you ask nicely they may say yes.

Step 2. Remove the bottom layer of boards using a hammer.

Step 3. Measure the very bottom corner of your lower bout.

Step 4. Cut the pallet using this measurement.

Step 5. Use 2x4s as inclosures for the stand. I used a 4x4 cut in half since I want to be able to hold 2-3 basses. You could use the 2x4s from another pallet. Check to make sure its strong because this will be the main part holding the instrument in place.

Step 6. Depending on the shape and curvature of your lower bout, you will need to cut the 2x4s at an angle. I cut mine at a 30 degree angle. word to the wise: make numerous small angle cuts for you can not replace wood once its removed.

Step 7. Nail or screw in place. Screw from the bottom of the stand as well so that the sides do not bulge out when a bass is placed upon it.

Step 8. Final touches: spray paint, stain or leave bare to your liking. I placed little felt risers on the bottom of the pallet so it does not scratch my hardwood floors. It will be fine resting on the stand if the angle is right. Since I will have lots of different basses coming in, I layered my angles with stuffing and cloth.
Enjoy. I hope you get something out of this post. If your want detailed pictures I would happy to post more. Please remember to REENFORCE!!! (they will be holding your babies up)

well, I have been repairing more basses lately and was running out of room. My wife had a bunch of pallets laying around, she is building tables out of them. I grabbed a couple and saw a very cheap way out for a bass stand. It is working great! give it a shot.
