DIY BMR dedicated treble cab

Having recently built a fEARful 15 Sub, I've thought about a separate cab to handle the higher frequencies. One of the considerations I've had is a wide, consistent off-axis performance. I looked into things like the fEARful headcase, and used a guitar cab I put together. But the guitar cab is complete overkill for home use (it's a 212), so I kept thinking about possible alternatives.

The speakers I use for my stereo are Philharmonic Audio BMRs, which were designed around the BMR driver. You can look up measurements of the Philharmonic speakers and you'll see that their dispersion is absurdly consistent in the horizontal plane (which is really all that matters for stereo speakers, IMO). A lot of this is owed to the BMR driver (and Philharmonic's extremely intelligent design of the overall speaker). Knowing about the BMR driver, and appreciating its performance in my stereo system, I couldn't help but think about it being used to cover the high frequencies in a bass cab.

Two immediate problems crop up: low sensitivity and low power handling. I decided I'd address the low sensitivity by using several drivers (and I know enough that if they're aligned vertically they'll act as a line array). As for the low power handling, I decided I'd wire them in series and ease my way up to high volume. With no intentions at the moment of using this anywhere other than at home, reaching ear bleeding volume isn't really much of a concern.

So anyway I ordered four drivers and a generic bookshelf speaker cab that would accommodate them. Today I got the cab partially assembled and threw the drivers in to make sure everything works. Here's what it looks like at the moment:

I offset the drivers on purpose because I read a little bit about it being advantageous for how the baffle affects the sound (can you tell I'm not an expert?). Right now the sides and back of the cab aren't on, but everything is working and actually sounds good. For the moment I have the crossover set at 360 Hz. I did that simply by ear...there's no deep science or math behind that decision. I don't have the means to do real measurements, but subjectively it seems to do what I intended: widely dispersed and consistent sound. Walking in an arc from one side to the other there's little to no difference in the sound (which is consistent with what I hear from my Philharmonic speakers) no matter where I stand.

Tomorrow I'll assemble the rest of the cab and mess with it more. At a minimum I think this is a fun experiment, and who knows maybe I'll want to use it for real some day. The form factor obviously isn't ideal, but again this is just an experiment for now and what I've made at this point is just a proof of concept.

To be clear, I'm not in any way suggesting that this is on the same level as designs like the fEARful or commercially produced cabs. This is just some clown who doesn't know what he's doing screwing around. I don't want anyone to think that I'm trying to put myself out there as the next greenboy or the like.

So anyway, I hope this was at least mildly interesting. I'll report back as I keep messing around with this.

Having experience with the Hi Fi industry is a past life, beware of the marketing claims being made by some of these technologies. The industry as a whole perpetuates marketing claims that neither accurately describe what’s claimed but the results as well.

The driver you chose has a polar pattern with no practical difference than many other 2” diameter drivers of more conventional construction.

The question is how to integrate such a driver into a low frequency section for bass guitar.

There are 2 major challenges, sensitivity and power handling. Using 4 drivers will increase the effective sensitivity by about 5dB but that still results in a net sensitivity of only 90dB/1W/1M.

The next problem is power handling. Real world, you can probably expect 20 watts RMS per driver, 80 watts total. This results in a maximum SPL of about 108dB semi-broad band.

To get at least reasonable power balance between the low frequency section, You need to choose a target SPL of the low frequency section and then choose a crossover frequency where the power balances due to the power density versus frequency spectrum curve for bass guitar.

I think you will find that this ends up around 400-500Hz depending somewhat on the amount of overdrive that you might use.

wiring the 4 speakers in series will improve the power balance between the two sections, but decreases the voltage sensitivity (different than power sensitivity) which may not be a good idea for balancing levels.

I may be slightly off on the sensitivity but it’s not 89dB/1W/1M average.

I noticed these were 4 ohms

And the HiFi compass website
Listed sensitivity 89 dB using 2.83 volts

Which would be 2 watts for 4 ohms.

So I usually loose interest at that point.

But the manufacturer PDF actually uses correct voltage and rates them at 86 dB

Line array is the way to do it for sure.
I'm sure a pair of these would sound good for home stereo listening too.

For simplicity for home use
a shallow cone 12" with more bandwidth could work as well.

The off axis fascination for bass gets weird
Most fundamentals are non directional.
5th harmonic still under 1.8k

Either way the project is a impressive home stereo/monitor

No need for warnings about the nonsense that floats around the hifi scene though, I'm definitely well aware of that. I don't buy expensive interconnects and that sort of foolishness. The Philharmonics, though, have actual measured data to back them up...not just the subjective writings of the magazine stooges. Of course just because the BMR driver works so well in the Philharmonics doesn't mean a clown like myself can throw them in a box and they'll work wonders for amplified electric bass. I'm definitely aware of that too.

All that being said, I very much appreciate your insights as well as those from @TransylvaniaE ...I'll keep those in mind while I mess with this. Not that I expect anything amazing to come from my own attempts...I'm looking at this as a fun little project with the possibility of sounding halfway decent (though I know that possibility is a long shot). Your insights illustrate how there is so much more to this stuff than just choosing drivers and wiring them up in a cab. I don't think I'll ever fully understand it all, and I definitely want to reiterate that I'm not trying to make myself out to be anything even approaching an expert. I'll be happy if I don't ruin any gear or burn the house down!

After thinking about this, and with the small drivers being 4 ohms, you are going to have to wire them all in series as a 16 ohm load, that's the only practical way to make it work safely.

I finished putting together the cabinet today. Obviously the sound is a bit less open because it's no longer an open baffle speaker, but it's still really consistent off axis (again, to my ears at least...I don't have the ability to measure it so of course there will be all sorts of biases at play in my subjective opinion).
 
On paper the drivers seem to be rather nice
Full range speakers.
And most HiFi speakers can be rather low
In sensitivity around 82 to 87 dB.

You arranged 4 drivers in a vertical line
Array. Which would be good practice
And sensitivity around 89 to 91 dB
Isn't very usable for live high SPL

But for home monitoring or practice
It's relatively good sensitivity.

I wouldn't doubt decent off axis response
They are small drivers and would do their job.

Long as it sounds good and works for the intended purpose.

Eminence makes a very good sounding dual cone 10" the B102. Very flat response clear speaker. But sensitivity was low 91dB. So often ignored for live applications. It makes nice monitor or recording speaker though.
I think it would go well with your line array for bass practice/recording/monitor

Since it's not for bone crushing SPL
It could be placed in a very large box for
A nice BB3 or EBS alignment. For very extended bass response.
