Double Bass DIY upright stand?

Jake - Yeah, adding feet is just what I was thinking. Bet I can screw on some 1.5" cubes. The wood should be left over. It might not even look bad, and should not affect the stability too much.

Bill Bentgen - Very nice - elegant, even. That is WAY beyond caveman carpentry! It even has adjustable contact points. Inspiring.

Just gotta love the beer crate, though...

Here's a really simple one. You can go to Home Depot and even have the parts cut by them if you don't have the tools. The 1"x8"'s are 2' long and the 4 pieces of closet hanger dowel are 1' long. This one is for my daughter to use at school. I also have a nicer one made from mahogany at home. Simple, very easy and fast to make and quite stable.

I debated whether I should start a new thread or revive an old one. Decided to revive the old since it was the inspirational muse that put the but in my ear so I could give credit where it is due. Also a subtle nod to Upton Bass for the visual aspect.

Just finished up my floor stand made from some scrap lumber in the shop. This one is really light, but sturdy. I’ll most likely make a beefier version using this one as a template. I didn’t want to waste good woodstock if it was something I wouldn’t be happy with. So far I’m happy.

Just need to find some cork sheet for those upper bars.

With that stand what's to stop the bass from tilting to one side and then falling since there's nothing holding the endpin?


I’m thinking if you’re at the point where you’re relying on a hole Closest to the fulcrum to prevent the whole thing from toppling over then it’s probably already too late.

Also, once you rest it in there it takes a little more effort to move it than you might expect. Mine isn’t too much different than the Upton Bass model, except I added two more crossbars than they did.

Wasn't there an earthquake in the NY area not too long ago? Tiny one? Or maybe I'm thinking of somewhere else out East, so no need to worry about the big object we live on not standing still... Out here on the wiggly West coast I hang all the basses from well anchored spots in the ceiling joists. If Vancouver starts shaking, basses might get a bruise or two but that's about it.

That was seven or eight years ago. The stout marble government building I was working in at the time was noticeably in motion. Thankfully that’s rare here.

If you expect the Earth to move more regularly, I’m a fan of removing falling from the equation and simply laying the bass down on its’ side.

On the G side, please. Don’t give the soundpost any place to fall *to.*
 
Unfortunately it's too often the case that a falling bass tends to land on the front. That's when you wish your soundpost wasn't in there, and is why I'm still trying to tinker together a short-range collapsible soundpost, something which can sustain against string pressure but shorten by 1/4" or so upon impacts to the bridge or back. Such a device would provide great solace for highschool bands, for example, where there's too often a tendency to stand a bass in a corner with no support against slipping... besides a bit of rubber and wishful thinking.
 
I'm testing this out and hope you can burst my bubble with all the ways this can go wrong. Live in earthquake country, hoping to use it in live applications (fill the bin with gear, use the bin for the bass once gear is set up). Bass is 5/8, endpin is fully extended.

You DON'T want to know how it can go wrong? Or are you joking? That is SCARY! Please don't trust plastic tubs to support a spreading stress like that. The plastic may fracture at the worst possible time, when you're 20 feet away and can only watch in horror as the thing tips over and the neck snaps in half on impact. As a bass is not just a scaled-up violin, it is actually much more fragile than a violin, counter to many people's assumptions. It really takes astonishingly little force to break a bass neck for example, or to poke a hole in a rib. I rarely see broken violin necks but get broken bass necks to repair all the time. Most are the result of someone assuming these are stronger than they are; supporting 1/2 of the bass on the scroll in a car and driving over a speed bump too quickly, imagining that a Bass Buggie (tm) is a temporary bass stand while loading up the car, or even just going through a low doorway too quickly without looking up as they pass. That stuff all happens in a padded gig bag. Bare, without even the foam, they are even more susceptible to damage. I truly hope you're joking... but if not, consider wrapping the top 2" or so of the plastic tub with many layers of duct tape to reinforce it against failure.
 
Well then by all means use a tub. But as I said, make that top edge tough as nails. A good quality duct tape/gaffer tape wrapped around it maybe 5 or 6 layers ought to be enough to prevent it splitting, these cloth tapes being very difficult to tear in thicker layers. Good luck! I'd also want to use something very well fastened in to grab the endpin by the way. A puck with a hole in it to prevent the bass sliding one way or the other. Basses have a knack for slipping and falling over. It's almost like they want to get hurt. My income sort of depends upon this... sadly.

That's been one of my mainstays for repair work. Schools are especially fond of the stand it in a corner and trust the rubber foot trick. Linoleum tiles are fickle - the grab of the rubber can seem very sticky, but the thing eventually wanders, then at a critical angle drops the bass onto the bridge, cracking along the full length of the bassbar and often the soundpost side as well. Very difficult repairs to do cheaply yet soundly, so quite often results in the school abandoning the bass and buying another.
