Have any of you actually tried this?

It looks cool as heck, and I'm seriously thinking about giving it a shot. I'm just not sure how specific it can get and as to whether it's on the up and up or just a bs sort of thing.

It is cool, but needs to be used with caution, as it might not tell you that much about your ancestry.

They test for mitochondrial and non-recombining Y chromosome and haplotypes. Mitochondrial DNA is inherited only from your mother. Non-recombining Y chromosome DNA only comes from your father. Even if you order both the Y and mtDNA kits, you don't cover much of your ancestry. If you were to go back even just five generations, 93.75% of your ancestors would not be covered by the tests.

Oprah Winfrey took one of these tests a while back and it came back that she was of South African ancestry. This led her to believe that her ancestors were Zulus taken as slaves to America. She even went as far to claim at a South African seminar that, "I went in search of my roots and had my DNA tested, and I am a Zulu."

Zulu historians were pretty quick to point out that there is no record of Zulus being taken as slaves to America.

Of course, she only had her mitochondrial DNA tested which showed that her maternal ancestor came from South Africa. It says nothing of the vast majority of her ancestry.
