do all these silly little small cabs actually make low noises?

I'm still working on my first bass rig:

So far I have in my possession in a GK Backline 210 cab. (I know backline cabs suck...i'll upgrade later : ).

I've got a deal with a guy for a GK 800RB..he's driving through my area on the 19th I'm picking it up then.

My first instinct was to get a 4 ohm Avatar 410 cab. I'm looking to spend about $300 max though and there aren't avatar 410s used anywhere.

I've may have a chance to get schroeder 1210 for 300, an aggie gs112 for $250 (or $300 if that falls through), or a bag end 15 for $275.

I like the multiple small cab idea but I'm concerned about being able to get the low end I want. (Not so much with the 15)

If I got a gs112 and paired it (stacked vertically) with the backline 210 (for while) would I miss the low end of the 410?

What would you recommend? I'm not looking for any tone in particular...I'm not a slapper or anything. I just want to play (mostly) in the pocket and provide a decent low end in a pop/worship/post-rock band.

If I should go with my first instinct does anybody know some other source (maybe another bass forum) to look for a Avatar 410? They're just a little too popular i guess.

It's true that silly little small cabs don't actually make a lot of low noises. However, "smallness" is determined on a per-driver basis. All other things being equal, if a 4x10 is exactly twice as big as a 2x10, it will go just as low. It might sound like it is going lower, because the higher frequencies are less audible off-axis.

What I've always heard (and has proven accurate in my experience)...
Of these three qualities: Small, Loud, Low you only get 2 out of 3.

Of the cabs you mentioned, I've owned the Schroeder 1210. While it played VERY loud, I was extremely underwhelmed with the bottom end. Compared to my Acme B2, about the same size and weight, Acme went MUCH lower, but nowhere near as loud. Those two examples are probably about as opposite sounding as you can get.

I updated my sucky peavey 2 x 10 with a pair of eminence kappa tens that i bought used for less than $150 for the pair..... WOW it thumps.
Drawback.... cab gained about 35 lbs over the shefeilds that were in it.
also ripped out the passive 12 dB crossover and relaced witha sturdy cap (4.0mfd,500VAC) from the L_pad to the tweet.
Now all frequency's go to the woofers uninhibited by passive components that distort at high power levels. The cap protects the tweeter from the low freqs and has a slow 6dB/octave slope and starts coming on noticeably around 5Khz. I barely turn the tweet on anyway.
My bud uses the eminence neodium mag woofs and likes them but he also uses a 15 cab as well.
cast frames, huge magnets and 3" max voice coils(more moving cone surface than 4" voice coils) seemed to do it for me, oh and 1000 watt amp at 4 ohms doesn't hurt either.
big b string sound!
As far as the 100+ lb cab goes, I'm 50 yrs old but i"ll shlep it as long as it works or as long as i can.

if you have any chance to get a Sunn 4x10 or 2x15 do that. if it's used you'll almost certainly get it for 300 or less. These things have volume and lows, in excess even. They will not dissappoint. I had two of the 4x10s for quite some time but got rid of them recently because they didnt fit in the backseat of my car. And yes, they are eminence equipped.

+1... great post on the extreme's of volume and low end in small cabs (given the same inputs), with most of the other executions falling somewhere in-between.

The Aggie GS112 does go pretty low & nicely too, & prividing your amp can handle the impedance -pairing it w/ the GK210 would be damn fine!!! I recently got a Aggie GS115 to use w/ the GS112 & tho it aint small - goes LOW BIG!!!! I got it at a great price as it'd been discontinued. May wanna look into this??
I may...I was leaning towards the gs112 anyway. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to disappoint in the bass department. (I'll be playing a bass through it...so thats important)

As for the 115. I may do that eventually...I like variety and the 800rb's extra 100 watt amp can go out into the 10s with the 112/115 pulling 4 ohms from the main out. Yeah.

jeez man how could you let those sunn 4 x 10s go

they look beautiful

and mean

I know lifting cabs sucks but ....oh well was not me carrying them

Yeah, it wasn't just the lifting though, I'm more into the big speaker sound. I have a 1x18 now and it's absolutely great. Just got a little 2x10 to complement it. thing is i just don't need the 4x10. But if youre into that sound, Sunn is the way to go:)
