Do genres kill music or do people kill music?

I'm going with people create music and often ideas are repeated because the forming of new distinguishing characteristics are based on the limitations at the time so to answer your question it would be yea.
Music is as much a trend as it sets trends. Since its a synthesis of emotion and available technology, its a constantly moving target that defies any attempt to nail it down. On a purely technical scale, symphonic classical music is the most complex in the western world, but that certainly doesn't make it popular. The most popular music is usually extremely simplistic and repetitive, which makes it marketable and memorable.
You will never find someone that doesn't hate some genre, if but for no other reason than that it doesn't speak to them.
Personally I can't anything on the radio anymore. Pop is...well what pop has always been: lame love songs set to a simple 4/4 beat with a catchy major melody. I can't stand it. Even what passes for "rock" or "alternative" (which was really just rock anyway) is some pretty watered down stuff. But that's me; I know I'm not normal in my musical taste.
The advent of digital recording and the internet means people now have access to as particular a music genre as they could want. That allows them to insulate themselves in what they like and dislike what is outside their comfort zone even more. Our politics are much the same way.
