Do I buy a new bass for slap...?

My "slap bass" is set up a little higher than my other basses. It works better for me.

Should you buy a new one? That's up to you. I'm lucky to have enough basses where I can keep one set up just for slap, so that's what I do.

I saw a different one, recently ...

Z = perfect number of basses to own

One very general tip to consider while bass shopping- a lot of people find that 24 fret instruments don't sound as good slapped compared to say 21 etc

You already have two basses, if slapping on dead strings bugs you, remove the strings from one bass and save them for later re-use. Then buy some fresh roundwounds and slap away.

The heart wants what it wants. And who am I to come between a man and his GAS.

But before buying a new bass that you don't really know will get you the result you're looking for, why not put some fresh rounds on your Jazz and slap them to death. You've still got your P for a flatwound sound. And you can always go back to flats if the rounds don't work out.

If they do work, there's no question you should get a separate bass for slapping. And it might as well be active since you know you'll get your money's worth out of it.

I've always preferred the sound of dead strings...for both guitar, and now bass (don't try and change my mind). Both my basses are pretty dead sounding and I'm really happy with where they're at...but I'm also trying to learn slap and of course this makes it super challenging.

Thinking maybe the easiest thing would be to grab another bass just for slap that I can keep fresh strings on. It might actually be more economical in the end as it won't get played nearly as much; I won't have to change strings as often. (Yes I am trying to justify it to myself lol)

Love my J; P is a close second. Couple bad experiences with Ray's and I'm over them; might have been perfect but they're returned and off the table. Also wonder if I should go active...but another passive jazz might also be the way to go.

An active jazz with stainless steel strings, 70s spacing, if you are after that Marcus miller slap tone.

This is Talkbass. We only buy new basses on days that end in "Y". Strict policy.

I suggest you put new strings on your slap bass, then move them to the other bass when they get too old to slap well. Saves you money on strings so you can afford your next bass.

If you start getting paying gigs where you are getting paid to slap, AND you only need one other bass, maybe. Until then, it's just an excuse for GAS.

You don't need one, I've found it helpful to have a bass set up for old school tones and another set up for modern/active tones. Different setups, different strings, different pups…Different tools for different situations.
