Do I need rounds when I have TI flats?

So I just got my first set of TI flats ever, put them on my Nash, and they sound amazing! They feel and respond differently (in a good way) than anything else I've ever played.

Now I want to put them on my Stingray special. Is there any reason I should keep rounds on the 'ray? or would the TI flats provide enough of the stingray growl?

I would never have just flats on basses. I do have one P bass with flats (which I love). But I gotta have both.


That said, I'm talking about me, and my goals. If your goals can be accomplished with flats on everything, and they bring you joy, then, by all means, rock 'em on everything you have.

I've tried flats on both my Fender P and Lakland Jazz and felt it was redundant. So I put roundwounds back on the Lakland. In my experience, I like having one of each. Ironically, I got a new Fender P and it had rounds on it. It's been a while since I played a P with rounds and man, did it sound good, until I tried recording and I missed the sound of flats. So EB Cobalt flats went on the new Fender P, and man, they sound good. So, flats on the P and rounds on the Jazz. That works for me. Find out what works for you.

Get some TI Jazz Rounds. I have JF’s on my L-1000 and JR’s on my L-2000. I even have JR’s on my Sterling Stingray shortie.

I tried flats once and found that there was something fundamental to the flats sound that wasn't for me, so it makes perfect sense to me that someone with different tastes could arrive at the opposite conclusion.

Also, Bernard Edwards' Stingray seemed to have coped with never seeing a roundwound string....
