Do I REALLY need a 5 string?

There are plenty of players that desire/demand 19mm string spacing at bridge, regardless of string number. And, I am glad that there are many such models available in 5 string to meet that preference.

However, I am very comfortable w/16.5 mm string spacing, so this type of 5 is my fave, especially in context with reasons 1 & 2.

Indeed. And the variety of 5-strings available means that no-one should dismiss 5ers based on experience of one instrument. I tried some that convinced me I'd stick with 4, and then a couple that showed me the light! I've still not tried every combination of neck shape, nut width, string spacing and scale length out there but I have found that I like a 19mm, 35" scale with an asymmetric neck profile. And I play mostly fingerstyle, just to show again that you need to try basses out rather than rely on internet advice!

For all I know, I may be even more comfortable yet with tighter string spacing, or on a multi-scale fanned fret neck, but for now I'm comfortable. And not looking to go back to 4 strings!

I'm going to keep the 5. It's in a case in the bedroom closet right now, but sometimes I do get the urge to practice with it. Thanks for all the opinions. Basically, I don't want to limit myself, I just enjoy the simplicity of the 4 much more. I just didn't want this to be a case of G.A.S. with no purpose other than ownership. I have to admit, it is a blast to play and some of the sounds I get on that B are pretty amazing. It probably won't get nearly as much playing time as the 4's. Thanks to all for chiming in.

In ten months I have learned one song which required the B string, and it was only for one note. I just play that song a half-step higher and I'm just as happy with it.

I'm not one of those anti-5ers and would enjoy a 5 if I had one. But 4s are enough for Wooten, Macca, and many more of our heroes.
