Do We or Don't We? Mexico? Too Dangerous???

Thinking about it, one could make the case that you shouldn't do this show on principle: The govt of Mexico has refused to addressed this problem - the nacro terroristas are like the Taliban South - Doing business, any business, down there is just supporting a bad system. It's sad, because there is a ton of good folks in Mexico - they just aren't running things.

I'd do the gig.

Free hotel, airfare, transportation and 5K cash? If that was the case, I'd certainly do it without thinking twice. I could get shot today walking on my way to the grocery store in my neighborhood with no money in my pocket...literally. Happens almost every day in Chicago. Not because I'm in a gang, but because these gangbangers don't know how to aim and don't give a rat's butt about who they hit with their wild bullets. Happens so much it sickens me.

This gig sounds like a BREEZE:
Fly to Mexico. Get transported straight to the hotel. Hide out in hotel until it's time to head to the gig. :hiding:

Get transported to the gig. Play the gig. Get transported back to said hotel. Hide out in hotel celebrating with a case of delicious cervesas until morning. Get transported to airport. Get on plane smiling with $1k in each of your pockets. Go home. Celebrate!

Seriously, I'll do the gig. If they're paying you guys $5k, it's gotta be a decent venue. This won't be some bar down a dark alley on a dead-end street, unless they're lying about paying you guys this much to play.

5/5 of my band mates would do it too, I'm 100% sure of it. If they can they fly us in from Chicago, we'd do it tomorrow. No offense, but your band sounds like a bunch of wussies.

We'll take the gig right now...PM me.

i with you tapper, my band would freak out & sacrafice me too if i turned down a 5k gig. & i would do the same to them.

i was born to have adventure & that is what this sounds like

I got an email a few months ago that there were more murdered on and near the Mex-US border in 3 years than in all of the Afghan "conflict".

Curious if thats true.

As for hte gig, I guess it'd depend entirely on where.

playing a gig in a foreign country with a high crime rate is not really reckless. now playing that gig & then doing something dumb like trying to score drugs & prostitutes is reckless.

Well, like I said: I'd probably do it... But I was the guy doing liquor runs on Route Irish between Baghdad and Camp Liberty in an Izuzu Trooper... so I am *not* the guy to trust to make rational decisions... But his band has backed out - - done deal. If his guys say no, what's he gonna do?

Another thing to consider, if they're really shelling out all this money (airfare, hotel, 5k cash, etc) there's gotta be some kind of production company behind it. I doubt your promoter buddy who you work with is setting up the whole thing himself and shelling out the bucks for this.

A large company like that isn't going to let you just die or get kidnapped. They'll have people watching out for your safety.

I think you need to sit down with your mates and discuss these positive points. Take the gig. Could be an amazing experience...

ok I love Monterrey and I am not saying that is the coolest city on the world but the fact is that drug dealers are killing each other, is not like drug dealers running on the streets shooting everybody, they know what they are doing, sad but true, if your planning to go to Mexico and do some business that involved drugs or guns then YES the probability that you be killed is around 90%. Monterrey population is 5- 6 million people, that make it dangerous. I have been in 55 countries around the world and you know that you need to be careful, you know that every country in this world have places that should never go, there are places in Chicago that are not safe for many people, places where the guy at the grocery store is attending behind a crystal window that is like 3 inches wide, Tokyo is pretty safe while Moscow is wild, when you are in Thailand you don't want to take a cab and run the streets looking for prostitutes, same in Monterrey , I lived there for 33 years and I know that there are places that I would never go. Thanks God I have not have any problem in any country so far.

Which is why I avoid those places as much as possible. I can take care of myself, but I'd rather not take the chance...I like breathing too much. :smug:

You MIGHT not get something from sleeping with that skanky girl on the corner, but wouldn't you rather just not have herpes? I like these analogies.
